Algae as an alternate energy source?

I am doing a report on alternate energy, and everyone else is doing water, wind, and sun ect. ect.
So I wanted to do something different and I remembered at a street fair I saw a booth about algae energy. I walked by, but now I wish I would hav stopped.
How can algae be used as an alternate energy source?
How?
And will this algae thing actually going to be used?
