These are the kind of lighting that has solar panels in them to collect the energy coming from the sun and then converts it to electricity. Such power is stored on reliable rechargeable solar battery. While solar powered lights can last giving off illumination up to ten hours, it should be noted that the brightness is at its fullest on the first few hours, then as the hours progress slowly fades until it runs totally of power. Still, if one is able to fully charge the batteries by letting them be exposed to sun shine for a long 8 hours, then you can be assured of more or less 8 hours of bright illumination. These solar outdoor lights possess built-in sensors that make them turn off automatically at the start of the day and then lights up during nighttime. As we all know that solar powered lights use clean alternative power from the sun, there is indeed something noble about us using these kinds of lighting in our garden. This means we are truly concerned about our environment by not using the conventional form of power or electricity. Energy from the sun is renewable environment friendly power, which means no dangerous pollutants are emitted. The only downside of solar powered lights is that they still have to show improvement when it comes to the intensity of the brightness of their illumination. They can be bright, but not as bright as the ordinary light bulbs that burn via electrical power. However, it is certain that with the continuous evolution of the solar technology, in no time will we see improvement of the solar lights on this regard. For now, the outdoor solar lights, especially of low wattage are excellent for lighting and accentuating the landscape of the garden. Solar powered lights are popularly associated with providing illumination and accent to the exterior areas of home properties such as gardens and walkways. But do you know that they are also useful for lighting up commercial and public places such as office parking lots, building car parks, bus stops and shelters, outdoor signage, streets, roads and highways and public and national parks?

What is immensely beneficial to these solar powered lights is the safety and security that it provides to the riding and walking public especially during the night hours. These outdoor solar lighting efficiently keeps the parks, roads and sidewalks brightly illuminated, which in turn deters any crime and other untoward incidents from happening, to the benefit of the pedestrians.

Of course, the city and local governments can benefit from the use of solar powered lights instead of the conventional ones when lighting up their offices, parking lots, streets and parks as running all these lighting can be very expensive and consume a good part of the government budget.

This is the reason why more and more US local governments and cities as well as those from all over the world are using solar powered lights as a much inexpensive lighting alternative. While replacing the old, conventional lights with new solar lighting can be very expensive, it cannot be denied that a significant amount of money originally allocated for power is saved with the long term use of such sun powered lighting gadgets.

And as the power comes from the sun, no pollution is further created unlike if electricity from carbon and fossil fuels is used in the case of conventional lights. What is great about solar powered lights is that there is no need to worry about installation as the process is easy since wiring and cords are absent.

Stig Kristoffersen asked:

Apple ha filed a patent for integrating solar cells into portable devices by placing them underneath the layers of a touch-sensitive display, according to the delivered patent application.

Solar power could help make devices truly portable, freeing from the need for wires to connect them to a power supply.

The larger the solar cell panel is the better it is for generating electricity, but as the patent “Solar cells on portable devices” warns, after allowing space for buttons, screens and a way to hold the device, only a small area is left on most devices for solar cells.

One of the ways around this dilemma is suggested in the patent as to stack a touch-sensitive layer, a display and solar panel on top of one another. That could make Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch good candidates for such a power supply, as the display occupies almost the entire face of those devices.

The use of solar powered charging in portable devices is starting to get more attention, for more immediate consumer use as well.

When Vodafone announced its plan in April 2008, to reduce its emissions of the greenhouse gas CO2 by 50 percent by 2020, it also announced plans for solar-powered phone chargers and universal phone chargers for Vodafone-branded handsets.

At the recent ITU Telecom Africa 2008 conference, Ugandan Minister for Communications and Information and Communication Technologies Ham-Mukasa Mulira talked about trials of solar-powered charging conducted there, which had showed promising results.
