I really do **** to be this way (negative), but you have to produce enough energy to make it all worth it and that is why small installations of anything of this sort, for the most part, are not worth it.

I dont see her producing one watt of power with her squirrel cage wonder

never thought of it but you’re damn right !!!!

Well regardless of the history of the hippie movement, it just doesn’t make sense to me why counterculture — and all the alternative viewpoints on drugs, sex, philosophy/religion, music, etc. that frequently go with it — have to be (or maybe just seem to be) a part of ‘green’ technology.
Right or wrong, there is a stigma attached to hippies and their culture. Stylizing the technology with a hippie feel drives the average Joe away from ‘green’ technology.
Just an observation.

well, timothy leery loved his LSD. I don’t see him as a big leader in the counterculture movement though. It was more about action then inaction. By the 70s, some hippies got burnt out though and left to their country communes to share yoghurt and grow cannabis.

Well that, and “tune in, turn on, drop out”…contradictorily so.

Because a lot of the hippy counterculture is about doing the most with what nature has blessed us with.

Why does it seem like people associated with ‘green’ technology always have to embody the hippy persona?

if you can make a small vawt using plastic pipes or bottles cut in half mounted to a sturmey archer or shimano dynohub then that can charge a small device

yes bcsicle is look better and more easy

im building special windmill to spin with out wind or bicicles good show

I had laugh about putting a VAWT horizontal, eliminating the advantages they cited. Running a centrifugal pump in driven mode isn’t too efficient, though. I’d guess it’s equivalent to a small-bladed Savonius, so it’s got the limits of any drag-type windmill. I’ve often wondered whether a high blade count on a Darreius would help, or if the extra drag would cancel the lift.

Yes,
You would need a small controller with a blocking diode. This small cage will not do a lot unless you are in a Nor’easter:-), but an Ipod 5-10 mph with a small Permanent Magnet motor as the generator I would think it should work.

can that thing charge an ipod?
April 22nd, 2009 at 12:24 pm
nice show but i dont think you get enough power out of it to do much , by the way your hot thanks AP
April 24th, 2009 at 1:20 am
I bet that thing in a 20mph wind makes less than 50 watts. WOW impressive
April 25th, 2009 at 1:01 am
they dont produce much torque power. you need this to produce the power you need. smaller area = smaller power output
April 26th, 2009 at 8:30 pm
very interesting.

I think alternators need some power put into them (from a battery) before power comes out because instead of permanent magnets they use electro magnets which also helps regulate how much power is extracted making it easier to regulate — fun project, could use a microprocessor to manage it all.

I loved your video, you made me have a couple cool ideas on a project im working at
thanks

Nice ideas, you talk very clearly, thanks

I have a blower fan attached to a 1/4 hp,1.2amp motor. I have been trying to get it to work as a electrical generator, however, I don’t get a charge out of with the cylinder spinning. Would anyone know if it’s just easier to mount the fan on to an old car alternator?

Two things:
1. Why all caps? It’s hard to read. Is your keyboard broken?
2. I’ve watched a bunch of your vidoes. Thanks for posting all the wonderful experiments. But, where is the science, as your name implies? I don’t see any data being collected. I don’t see any calculations on power or efficiency.
In this video she said the vertical axis windmill is running under no load in a slight breeze. So what?? What’s that good for?? Put a load on something and make some calculations.
